Trained from a young age by her father to help as his assistant, by 20 Angelica already had a reputation as an exceptional artist with bishops and nobles sitting for her.

A Swiss Neoclassical painter she was skilled as a portraitist, landscape and decoration painter but identified herself as a history painter, a designation which was considered the most elite and lucrative art category. History painting was a difficult field for women to enter since it required training with nude male models which, for modesty reasons, women were excluded from!

Angelica was one of two female founding members of the Royal Academy. After her colleague Mary Moser’s passing in 1819 it took a further 125 years before another female artist was elected to full membership of the Academy.
