Celebrating Berthe Morisot 1841-1895

Described as one of “les trois grandes dames” of impressionism Berthe Morisot was a highly respected French impressionist painter. She exhibiting many times in the esteemed Salon de Paris and in 1874 she joined the company of now famous masters like Cezanne, Degas, Monet, Pissario, Renoir in exhibiting in their own exhibition after they were refused by the Salon.

Mary painted what she experienced on a daily basis, often depicting domestic scenes. This and a lightness and elegance in her painting style is likely to have contributed to her struggles to be taken seriously as an artist, male critics often labelled her work as full of “feminine charm”.

Despite this, her work sold comparatively well in her lifetime and in 2012 she became the highest priced female artist (to that date) when one of her art works sold for $10.9million at a Christie’s auction.
