Élisabeth was a prolific painter, creating 660 portraits and 200 landscapes in her lifetime. She began early, already painting portraits professionally by her early teens. She made a name for herself as a portrait painter to Marie Antoinette, creating more than 30 artworks of the Queen and her family. She also enjoyed the patronage of many European aristocrats and was elected to art academies in 10 cities.

In 1787 she caused a minor public scandal. Exhibiting this “Self-portrait with her Daughter Julie” at the esteemed Salon de Paris where visitors were shocked to find that Madame Le Brun had dared to defy convention and show herself smiling with an open mouth and in doing so to expose her … teeth!
