Sofonisba was the first female painter to establish an international reputation. Born in Italy by the age of 26 she was skilled and renowned enough to receive an invite from Prince Philip of Spain to attend court where she spent 14 years as an official court painter and lady-in-waiting to the Queen. This made her one of the first, and as it turned out, one of the most successful of the few female court painters.

When young it was not possible for Sofonisba to become an artist’s apprentice, this route was only for men. Fortunately for Sofonisba she came from a noble family and had a father who believed in the education and careers of women. Thanks to his support she was able to train with Bernardino Campi and later met and trained informally for with Michelangelo who recognised her talent upon meeting.

Sofonisba experimented with different syles of painting and became known for her own style of portraiture, setting subjects informally which was highly unusual at the time. She is now regarded as one of the most influential painters of the early modern period. Her works have influenced generations of painters of both genders and her success in life opened doors for many women to pursue professional careers as artists.
